A beginning student undertaking the study of Graphic Design can expect to become acquainted with the basic principles and terminology, guidelines, methods, and systems used to solve graphic design problems. They will develop the ability and confidence to determine the appropriateness, feasibility and success of a potential design. There are various areas of focus for a graphic design student. The basic emphases taught at the university level include: print, typography, package design, and the nature of identity.

Print Design can be found everyday in the packages we consume, magazines we read, and billboards we drive past. The study of print design will encompass concept development through a wide range of materials including brochures, corporate campaigns, posters, environmental media, information design, and branding.

Typography studies the hand lettering of classic, historically relevant typographic forms that are the foundation of contemporary typographic esthetics. It trains the eye and hand and encourages a high-level of perception of differences inherent in alphabets of various styles.

Package Design studies will include an examination of materials and processes as they relate to the manipulation of forms for packaging. Through an understanding of the qualities inherent in various packaging materials, students produce a variety of packaging solutions dealing with shape, form and volume.

It is also very important for every student to also understand the concept, Nature of Identity, which means to visually and verbally identify branding as it relates to a variety of businesses and their organizational structure and to investigate what defines the personality, identity and substance. This will only be achieved through in-depth research, design, creation, and execution of brand and identity programs. Your creative thoughts brand a company's image and must be chosen to suit a company's structure, personality, and intended pursuit in the marketplace. It plays a powerful role because, quite often, a package sells a product.

In Graphic Design, every area of focus works together in the process of building a message of style and intent. The ability to captivate an audience lies within your own creativity. The first step, however, is to gain the necessary fundamental skills through the study of graphic design to allow for one's creativity to come to life with the standard of professional quality.
